Local Runner Spotlight – Kathie Phillips


What is your occupation? I am a stay at home mom.  I sell 
food storage on the side for a company called Daily Bread.
Where are you from/tell us about you? I was born in Kemmerer 
Wyoming but moved to Provo at three and then to Orem 
when I was in the 4th grade.  My Husband and I moved to 
Bountiful 5 years ago from Sandy. I have three children 
Jordan (18) Nick (16) and Katlyn (15) my husband and I have 
been married 22 years. I am a BYU fan even though I graduated 
from the University of Utah
How did you get started in running? In 2004 I was at my sister 
house for thanksgiving.  She had just finished her first marathon 
and was going to run her second with my other sister.  I said that
 I wanted to join in and they said I could.  At the time I couldn’t
 run more than a half-mile with out walking.  In 2005 I ran my
 first marathon in 4:50:XX in 2006 I lost 30 pound and ran my 
second marathon in 4:05:XX.  My marathon pr is now 3:59:01. 
 I would like to get 3:50:00 this year at St. George and Boston 
Qualify.
What teams have you been on? I have never been on any team 
I am not that good.
Tell us about an interesting/funny experience you have had with
 running? I guess this year at the St. George marathon was 
“interesting” my sister got hypothermia and I was afraid for her life!
What is your currently weekly mileage? Right now around 20 –30 
miles per week.  I am in between races right now.
When is your next race?  What other races do you planned for 2009?
 My next race is the Painters half marathon January 17.  In 2009 I plan
 on running Painters Half, Lake to Lake relay, Ogden half marathon,
 Wasatch Back relay, Hobble Creek half, Top of Utah marathon and 
St. George Marathon.
Favorite run? Up to Elephant Rock and back to my house is exactly 
12 miles! It is my favorite hill workout 
Favorite race distance? I like both the half and the full marathon 
distance I hate 5k’s they kill me!
PR’s & most memorable race? Half pr 1:53:03 marathon pr 3:59:01 
5k-pr 24:59
Favorite products? Smartwool socks Mizuno elixir (they stopped 
making them and now I don’t know what shoe to buy!)
Why do you run? It makes me feel so much better.
What are your running goals? I would like to qualify for Boston although 
I don’t think I want to run the race (too crowded)
Best advice you have been given by someone about running? The Pain 
stays the same it will not get better if you walk so just keep running!
