Frustrated with Swimming?

November 19, 2013 by

I remember when I first started swimming as an adult and how frustrating it was.  Coming from a running background and being in great physical shape when I started swimming I had a difficult time understanding why I couldn’t just swim as fast as I wanted to.  I had the strength to do it but just not the technique.  I also had to learn to time my breathing right.  Unlike running, you can’t breathe whenever you want in the water.  Over the last nine to ten years I have developing my stroke and become a much better swimmer which has resulted in better triathlon race results.  I can’t emphasis enough the importance of learning proper technique when you first get started.

I’ve had a lot of people contact me for swimming help since I now coach swimming, however they are hesitant to have anyone watch them or have an underwater video taken because they don’t feel confident they are “good enough.”  They often feel self-conscious and want to “practice” more before we meet up however they often don’t realize that the more they practice something wrong, the more time it will take to correct it.  Often people that are frustrated with swimming avoid the pool and their hopes to practice more are foiled with self-doubt.  So, I suggest, bite the bullet and get coaching!  Having coaching feedback can help you learn things that will immediately help you improve your stroke and help you know where to put your energy to make progress in the pool.  It’s all about technique when it comes to swimming faster.  Winter is a great time to put time in at the pool and perfect your stroke.  Who knows, you actually might end up loving the pool like I do.  Swimming is!

Coach Lora Erickson

“Thank you so much!  You are a fantastic coach. I know I have a ton to work on but to be completely honest, I’m so excited right now. My perspective has completely changed from I just have to get through the swim to I think I can do it well. I’m looking forward to this new sport and excited to train. Thanks for making it fun! And understandable!  You are great!”  ~ J. H., swim instruction participant

“Your clinic was absolutely time well spent.  You are AMAZING.”   ~ Emily G.

“I first met Coach Lora when I participated in her underwater swim analysis class. Although I grew up by the beach and swimming in the ocean, the pool was new to me. This small group class was held at the pool and she uses an underwater camera to film you. You meet a week later individually and she review your stroke and things to work on. My knowledge of good freestyle technique was limited, however, I worked on what I learned. Several weeks later, I had the opportunity to participate in the on land, lecture style swim-clinic. I really didn’t expect that a discussion format with film clips would make a difference, but to my surprise, the next time I went to the pool, I was like a new person in the water. More efficient and much faster, even in my board shorts. I highly recommend both classes individually, but the combination for me has helped a ton. Coach Lora is knowledgeable and enthusiastic and really cares about your progress individually.”  ~ Dr. Scott T., M.D.
